The history and legendary background of

St Mark’s Church . Badulla. Sri Lanka.

Many years of parish life has been lived around St Mark’s Church Badulla. With the opening of plantation in mid 19th century, St Mark’s was the first church to be consecrated in 25th April 1857 by Rt.Rev.James Chapman, the first Lord Bishop of Colombo and since then more churches have been added in the province.

This article is brief and incomplete. The information gathered from parish records, register and souvenirs. This gives the reader some brief idea of St Mark’s through it’s years of existence.

St Mark’s Church is situated in Badulla the capital city of Uva province. Before 1857 services were held in the court house by clergy stationed in Nuwaraeliya.

This church was built in memory of Major Thomas William Rogers, Assistant Government Agent of Uva province. He died in 1845 June 7th under tragic circumstance, struck by lightning at Sherwood estate in Haputale.

It was suggested by Rambukpotha Dissawa, a kandyan chieftan to build a place of worship in memory of Major Rogers.
